Ecotherapy focuses on healing our relationship with nature, including all life forms and the earth we inhabit. In a culture of mass consumerism, exploitation of natural resources and oppressive treatment of animals we have become disconnected from each other, the world around us and ultimately ourselves.

Some individuals experience intense grief in response to the devastating impact we are having on the environment and the suffering inflicted on our fellow creatures. In "Living in the Borderland: The Evolution of Consciousness and the Challenge of Healing Trauma", Jungian analyst Jerome Bernstien refers to these individuals as "Borderland" personalities. He views these sensitive souls as playing a critical role in the evolution of human consciousness.
