Petition to Stop RolkurBelow is a link to an online petition to stop Rolkur, a practice involving severe hyperextension of the horse's neck used by some in dressage. Here is a link to a video on YouTube of a horse being forced into rolkur during a warmup for a world cup qualifying event: http://www.youtube.com/user/eponatv#p/u/ The FEI is the international organization that oversees the regulations for competitive dressage. Dr. Gerd Heuschmann is a veterinarian who is opposed to this practice and has written a book on it (http://www.amazon.ca/Tug-War-Classical-Incorrect-Negatively/dp/1570763755/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1265432321&sr=1-1). He is petitioning the FEI to ban this practice at a meeting on February 9th. Please go the his publisher's website to sign this petition to ban this cruel and unnecessary practice: http://www.wu-wei-verlag.com/neu/ua.php?DIR

"Beyond the Whisper" with Carolyn ResnickI just got back from a 3-day private workshop with Carolyn Resnick. The weather in southern California was beautiful with sun and temperatures around 20° C. Carolyn's method, "Liberty Training, Beyond the Whisper", is based upon the 7 Waterhole Rituals, which are key behaviours she observed in wild horses that allow them to live harmoniously in a herd. Working progressively through the rituals ultimately leads to a magnetic bond with the horse. An essential element of this method is that the horse always has the option to leave during a training session, ensuring that his participation is always voluntary. The approach is tailored to the horse's personality, interests and aptitudes. Training sessions are flexible and guided by the horse's mood and behaviour. If a certain training activity is not working out the subject is dropped and reintroduced at a time when the horse is more receptive. As is characteristic of lead horses, conflict, particularly with dominant horses, is avoided. A dominant horse instinctively fights for his position in the pecking order when he feels challenged. I will be working intensively with my herd using Carolyn's method in the upcoming weeks. In March I will begin offering both Horsemanship Clinics based on the 7 Waterhole Rituals and EFP based on "Beyond the Whisper" horsemanship. I highly recommend reading Carolyn's book, "Naked Liberty". Her new book on the waterhole rituals will be released later this year. You can also follow her blog and watch videos using her technique at www.carolynresnickblog.com. Her DVD's "Introduction to The Waterhole Rituals" and "Panadero's Journey" are also very good. Stay tuned for more information. * Note: In order to continue my studies with Carolyn I am looking for someone to video some of my training sessions for her to review. If you are interested please contact me. This would provide a great opportunity to learn more about this innovative approach to horsemanship.

Training with Carolyn ResnickI am very excited to be leaving next week for a 3 day private workshop with Carolyn Resnick (www.carolynresnickblog.com) in Escondido, California from January 10-12. Carolyn wrote "Naked Liberty" in which she describes how she developed her method of Liberty Training, "Beyond the Whisper". The basis of her training method is "The Water Hole Rituals" that she discovered while observing and eventually integrating into a herd of wild horses during her childhood. Central to her approach is developing a strong "magnetic" bond with the horse at liberty. She does not use a round-pen, except for some advanced work. As she states in her book, "Starting in a round pen without a bond... creates a feeling of powerlessness... Restricting a horse to a round pen until he comes to terms with his predicament has little to do with my work. My method allows the horse freedom to escape anything he doesn't like doing. I never impose my will on a horse if the horse is not willing and happy to follow my lead... Friendship by choice, without resistance or capture, is the issue. This philosophy is my spiritual path and I have learned that I can put order in chaos and lead without entrapment or force from a unity that exists in every moment." There has always been something about "Natural Horsemanship" that didn't quite resonate with me. I now believe this dissonance was related to the pressure that is involved at times with this approach. It is also very human agenda driven. On a deep level I seek to connect with horses in a way that nurtures mutual empowerment, self-dignity and respect. I would also like the freedom to explore co-creative fluidity in the relationship, thereby honouring the shared journey rather than focusing exclusively on a behavioural endpoint. Stay tuned for updates from sunny (hopefully!) southern California next weekend.

Planning Collaborative Book on Healing Psychological Trauma in HorsesI am very excited about a new book project that I am undertaking on healing psychological trauma in horses. Three amazing authors have already expressed interest in contributing chapters to this book: Margrit Coates: www.thehorsehealer.com ; author of several books, including "Healing for Horses: The Essential Guide to Using Hands-On Healing Energy with Horses", "Horses Talking: How to Share Healing Messages with the Horses in your Life" and "Connecting with Horses: The Life Lessons We Can Learn from Horses". Linda Kohanov: www.taoofequus.com; author of "The Tao of Equus: A Woman's Journey of Healing and Transformation Through the Way of the Horse", "Riding Between the Worlds: Expanding Our Potential Through the Way of the Horse" and "The Way of the Horse: Equine Archetypes for Self-Discovery". Mary Midkiff: www.womenandhorses.com: author of "She Flies Without Wings: How Horses Touch a Woman's Soul" and "Fitness, Performance and the Female Equestrian". Through my work in the field of Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy I have been particularly interested in the similarities I have seen between the presentation of developmental trauma in my clients and the behaviours and defenses used by horses with a known or suspected history of trauma. Previously abused horses are often used in Equine-Assisted programs. In the role of healer the horse often experiences some healing as well. I would like to see the horse's healing journey become more of a focus and priority. Through this book I hope to increase awareness of the high prevalence and significant impact of psychological trauma in horses and present a holistic array of modalities that can help these horses heal. This will be a collaborative effort with authors renowned for their innovative approaches to working with horses. I also plan to address the issue of "What About the Horse?" with respect to the use of horses in Equine-Assisted/Facilitated therapy programs. I also hope to create a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to increasing awareness, understanding and healing of psychological trauma in horses. It would be great to have an annual forum for education and advancement in this field. Stay tuned for more details.

Exciting Trip to CA and AZ in February!!I am very excited about an upcoming trip I have planned to Big Sur, California and Tucson, Arizona in early February. I will be doing 3 days of one-on-one intensive training with Barbara Rector (www.adventuresinawareness.net), the grandmother of Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy. She even trained Linda Kohanov. On the 4th day we will be doing a tour of some of the other programs in the area. I will then be heading to the Esalen Institute (www.esalen.org) to do a 5 day workshop, "Seduced By Earth: Deep Imagination, SoulCraft and the Dreaming of Nature", with Bill Plotkin (www.animas.org), who is world-renowned in the field of echopsychology and the author of two best selling books, "Soul Craft: Crossing into the Mysteries of Nature and Psyche" and "Nature and Human Soul: Cultivating Wholeness and Community in a Fragmented World". Bill is on sabatical in 2010, so I am lucky to be taking his only workshop for the year. Esalen is located 45 miles from any other civilization and is right on the ocean! These two experiences will be amazing in helping me further develop my program here.

Isis starts trainingIsis went on her first trailer ride today since coming here from auction. She was understandably anxious, but loaded with no problems. We went for a visit to East Acres Equestrian, where she met Chelsea, the riding coach and trainer there, and a couple of thoroughbred friends, May and Rosie, who are also rescues. (They will be posted on www.horsesneedinghomes.com in the near future.) Chelsea took Isis into the arena and lunged her. Isis had obviously been longed at some point in the past and was a star. She moves beautifully and her gaits look very smooth. We then let her explore the arena and she had a good roll in the sand. Isis and I will be continuing training sessions with Chelsea every Monday afternoon with the intent of eventually riding her.
